vital. If there is any doubt as to whether or not someones actions are ethical, his or her reputation is likely to be irreparably damaged and all their decisions immediately
come under scrutiny. That is the case with the appointment of Kirsten Gillibrand: was her appointment to fill Hillary Clintons senate seat unethical, or perhaps motivated by a need to
fulfill some sort of affirmative action requirement? If there is any single program that has been grossly misunderstood, it is surely Affirmative Action. Because its not clear, its easy to
mischaracterize, as has been done; this has resulted in many states dropping it. In order to understand the situation in New York, it might be instructive to consider what Affirmative
Action really is and what it is not. The American Psychological Association notes that few issues of policy "have served as a better gauge of racial and ethnic divisions
among the American electorate than that of affirmative action" (Affirmative action: Who benefits?, 2009). Numerous studies have indicated that most Americans think affirmative action is synonymous with "quotas, set-asides, and
preferential treatment" given to minorities and women at the "expense of white males" (Affirmative action: Who benefits?, 2009). This issue has apparently cut across the political spectrum with leaders on
