When affirmative action was first introduced, its primary purpose was to give minority groups the same - or better - opportunities as their white counterparts where education, employment and economic advancements were concerned. What this meant in the academic world, for example, was if two entrance candidates were equally qualified on all levels, yet one was a minority and the other was white, the minority would automatically be accepted. There are times, however, when an underqualified minority wins out over a qualified white individual just to meet the necessary quota. The reasoning behind this was to illustrate how other races were viewed as getting the short end of the stick if they had to compete against Caucasians. However, the preference that has been given to minority groups has considerably backfired, creating an unfavorable climate of white prejudice and effectively maintaining the "unpopular but necessary" (Chang, 1997) attitude toward the overall notion of affirmative action.
