"affirmative action" and is best summed up by former Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmuns famous dictum that, "In order to get beyond racism, we must first take race into
account" (Puddington 21). Arch Puddington criticizes Blackmuns "Orwellian" stance, suggesting that never before has a democratic governments policy so completely contradicted the core values of its citizenry. Certainly, racial preference
does violate the American ideal of fairness (21). Perhaps affirmative action was necessary at the turn of the century when both slaves and women were slowly afforded the same rights
as white men in America. Is it still necessary now? Some white males claim that affirmative action has limited their school choices by admitting less qualified students if they are
of the desired category to achieve a racial or gender quota. This is equally true in business matters. Also, these programs may actually hurt the people they are supposed to
help. The programs could conceivably put minorities at a psychological disadvantage as they are in a seemingly lower position from the outset. One must have a substantial amount of
optimism, stamina and motivation to succeed in the business and academic worlds, regardless race or gender. Thus, the programs designed to help may have a detrimental effect. On the other
hand, woven into the fabric of contemporary American society is an intense prejudice against minorities that propels some white people to put on hoods and cover their faces at night.
It causes cross burnings on the lawns of African Americans. It is demonstrated by swastikas and other graffiti on temples that serves to exacerbate an already divided society. With
so many prejudiced people in America, perhaps help for minorities is necessary. Affirmative action could be just the thing to equalize matters in an educational and business system that has
