The intent of Affirmative Action is to level the playing field so that all people, regardless of their race or gender, have an equal chance in the our world. The controversy surrounding affirmative action, however, revolves around the contention that when one race or gender is promoted at the expense of others we experience reverse discrimination. The lesson to be learned, of course, is that rather than being abolished affirmative action policies should proceed diligently toward its goal of insuring that no group is oppressed for the express purpose of furthering anothers interest. The interests of white males is just as important as the interests of females and minorities. The intent of affirmative action is to protect all equally. Affirmative action assures that the individuals that have been traditionally oppressed will be given a leg up in terms of procuring jobs. Affirmative Action is not a single idea or tool, however, instead it is a multitude of ideas and tools used to increase the presence and condition of minorities and women in previously white male dominated roles. This includes not only employer/employee situations, but also school demographics, voter demographics and numerous other arenas where race and gender has historically been an issue. Its critics, however, contend that affirmative action in effect oppresses another category of society. That category of course is white males, those very individuals that (prior to Affirmative Action policies) once dominated workplace hiring practices and, in actuality, practically every other aspects of society.
