common to see female doctors. Presently, there is a female candidate for the Democrat presidential nomination as well as an African American. Many look around and believe that things are
well as far as diversity is concerned. Yet, prejudice lingers and that cannot be ignored. Affirmative action is something that has emerged as a part of national law and it
has been reinforced by various state and institutional rules. In the United States, the history of affirmative action programs has been associated with the desire to overcome discrimination in society
("Affirmative action," 2008). This would be accomplished by making sure that jobs and resources were available to all minority groups, including women ("Affirmative action," 2008). Policy was put into place
by federal agencies as they enforced The Civil Rights Act ("Affirmative action," 2008). The federal government, educational institutions that take government money, and all government employees, are affected by affirmative
action ("Affirmative action," 2008). In 1972, The EEOA would set up a way to enforce such plans with the creation of quotas, but that would bring charges of reverse discrimination
("Affirmative action," 2008). Of course, the era of fighting affirmative action is seemingly over. There had been a few cases over the years, but while still controversial, much of the
opposition has died down. Interestingly, while many think of affirmative action as a modern invention, the concept was actually utilized many years ago. Of course, the programs did not
go by the name Affirmative Action. Still, the idea did exist. In fact, it is known to have evolved since the days of slavery (Rubio, 2001). Rubio (2001) writes:
