not living as an aesthetic, they may be criticized by the devoted. People leave ordinary life to become nuns, priests, monks and so forth. They give up their worldly possessions.
Some, like Mother Theresa, later become saints. Critics of Christianity believe that they should not be subject to anything with such an extreme dogma and that the spirit needs to
have freedom. Nietzsche for example criticized Christianity to help people understand Christian writings rationally, according to a student. That said, even though there are flaws in Christianity, Nietzsches stance is
not necessarily a good argument. A student requests that Nietzsches position may be used to more thoroughly understand the meaning of Cassians position in his Conferences in respect to the
purpose and value of asceticism and motivations and effects. First, it is important to examine these concepts. Aestheticism is aligned with things such as living a sparse life aligned
with Gods will. The people who practice this type of lifestyle give up worldly possessions to serve God and in that, they find fulfillment. John Cassian (1997) wrote extensively about
this topic. For Cassian, the goals of asceticism seem to be the preparation of the soul, the service to God and those things aligned with Christian ideals. Munz (1960) writes:
"In Cassians view this ego-building ...can be reduced, step by step, to the eight vices; and conversely, each of the eight vices is responsible for one feature in our
