course, there is more to the story than that. But indeed, there is cannibalism in this intriguing play set in Ancient Greece. Much can be said about the fact that
in life, as in literature, there is a sense of discord in the family. In this case, there is extreme behavior as murder takes center stage. Within the family, there
is murder and the serving of people in a stew and then there is the giving up of ones own flesh and blood for a favorable wind. In contemporary times,
there is a sense that families do not get along either. Of course, murder only occurs in a minute number of situations when the situation is abusive. Children are sold
perhaps only by parents on crack. This is not the norm. The play demonstrates a theme that is perhaps commonplace-family discord-- but has components that are larger than life. Even
for the point in time, the work is fantastic. The events are hard to believe. Why did the author write this work? It is hard to know for
sure exactly why he created Agamemnon, which happens to be part of a trilogy, but it does appear that the reason is twofold. First, the author wanted to convey something
political. It was a time when democracy was rising and this type of government was at the forefront of most speech. Two, he wanted to say something about human nature
and the fact that people are selfish. He wanted to say something about family life. Perhaps he was conveying the message that family discord is prompted by selfishness. Indeed, in
all of the tragedies, people are meeting their own needs without much thought about anyone else. It is also a play where human life is undervalued and people are living
