Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction Advertising is amazing. It can be beautiful or crude, exciting or clinical, but it almost always
catches our interest. This paper examines an advertisement and argues that despite its artful composition and undeniable beauty, it does not accomplish its goal. Discussion The advertisement appears in the
issue of Architectural Digest. The magazine is aimed at the wealthy elite and features ads for expensive jewelry, top of the line automobiles, and fabulously costly home furnishings.
However, the target audience of the magazine is not necessarily the same as its readership: many people who cannot possibly afford anything in the magazine subscribe to it because they
enjoy looking at the beautiful homes and gorgeous furnishings. The ad appears on page 40 of the issue. It is a single page advertisement and the photo takes up
the top three-quarters of the page, with 25% of the space left underneath for copy. The photo is of a room in a house near a large body of water.
The camera is slightly above the mid-line of the shot, so it is looking down at the carpet and furniture. There are three picture windows - directly in front and
on both sides - so that the only architecutrual elements in the shot are the ceiling and the pillars at the corenrs; the rest of the room is open to
the view. The carpet is a nubby-textured sandy beige, the sofa, which is facing the camera, is a very light tan with 12 or 13 (its hard to tell) matching
