During the Great Depression, adversity was inescapable. Many Americans had lost their fortunes, their jobs, their homes, and their self-respect. Some were able to confront such overwhelming adversity in a positive way and make new lives for themselves. For others, unfortunately, adversity proved too brutal an opponent, and chose instead to take their own lives. Willy Loman, Arthur Millers protagonist in his 1949 Pulitzer-winning play, Death of a Salesman, was a product of the Great Depression. But he never wavered in his relentless pursuit of the American Dream. Standing supportively by his side was his wife Linda and the two Loman sons Biff and Happy. To the outside world, they represented the postwar American family, those who had endured difficult times but remained together and strong despite them. However, inside the modest home, the familys struggles with adversity are palpable. Just as his name symbolically indicates, Willy Loman was always the low man on the socioeconomic totem pole. He has faced personal and professional adversity much of his life. He feels inferior to his older brother Ben, who he has transformed into an all-knowing larger-than-life success he can turn to when he needs reassurance that a piece of that American Dream is still within his grasp. Willys never say die attitude never took him beyond being a neer well to do salesman, who now over 60, is fighting to hold onto his ever-dwindling territory.
