This Korean company, like many others in the area, attributes much of its success to the way in which teamwork has emerged. This is seen at the factory floor, up to corporate level where strategic alliances also embody the team spirit. In looking at the literature regarding teamwork it is apparent where the advantages can be gained, especially in an industry where intellectual capital and needs to be utilised. IBM may not use al f these, but by looking at the different approach some aspects of IBM Koreas development may be reflected. In any company the operational aspect of the company needs to adopt structures that will allow for development and further innovation. Many of the newer models of organisational structure are capable of providing the required level of flexibility and incorporate the ideas of organisational learning which are required where technology is present (Senge, 2002). The majority of organisations have structures that were formulated for effective operations over a century ago. Technology was very different, computers had not been invented and information based systems were not present. Even communication systems were severely constrained leading to an environment where decisions and information had a slower and more limited value. Teamwork was limited to immediate colleagues only. However, with technology developing and companies needing to be more flexible, teamwork is changing, and becoming more than simply the work between a few shop floor colleagues.
