An 8 page paper discussing the value of Internet-based study. The availability of online degree programs opens a wealth of possibilities to those who would have no access to those programs in only the traditional setting. Certainly there are disadvantages to the virtual classroom format, as there are with the traditional classroom format. The advantages outweigh those negatives, however, allowing the Internet to assist in bringing high-quality education to a greater number of people, and in a wider range of socioeconomic demographic groups. It allows the "late bloomer" adult or the mid-life career-changer the freedom to pursue new interests, and to gain the degrees necessary for securing positions in which their years of practical work experience can be of benefit to greater numbers of people. Distance learning in whatever medium is not a new idea, but has been practiced since the turn of the last century. The old correspondence school has gained new life
with the advent of the Internet, bringing the ability to gain undergraduate or advanced degrees to those who likely could not otherwise hope to gain those degrees.
Some say that online degree programs are both valid and valuable, but many claim extension of graduate programs to an Internet-only approach lessens the value of
the graduate degree. As is the case in many other instances, such blanket statements are not as valid as their speakers would wish them to be.
Whats Available Online? There are a few fields of study and a few established universities offering undergraduate degrees
online, but the great majority of Internet-based degree programs are those at the Masters and doctorate levels. There are practical issues to consider, and those degree programs available online
are not those that require any specific laboratory work or any other similar physical restriction. The newest twist in the distance learning of
today is that many old, established and respected universities are offering many courses online, and increasing numbers are offering complete degrees. Some limit their offerings to full degree programs
only. Duke Universitys MBA program is one of the most respected in the country, and it is known for its innovation. It was offering weekends-only classes for working
