However, although there are many advantages, there are also disadvantages. Advantages The creation of the EU has many advantages. The founding of the EU took place shortly after the end
of the Second World War. This war had devastated much of Europe with a high human and economic cost. Robert Schuyman and Jean Monnet developed a plan with the aim
of creating stringer trading links with the aim of creating unity and ties which would help prevent war, in a way that the political tools had failed. The idea was
that by creating strong common trading interests that would reduce the potential or motivation for another war. Therefore, strong trading ties helps to create increased unity. The aspect of
the trading union has advantages in the way it impacts on trade between nations, reducing trade barriers and opening up markets which provide many countries with opportunities. The decrease in
barriers and offers an opportunity for businesses, and a nations economy as a whole, to benefit from an increased level of international trade. This is as a direct result of
the opportunities offered, as well as creating a greater level of efficiency in international trade by reducing costs, such as trade tariffs. The concept of comparative advantage also has the
potential to lead to an overall increase in productivity in the area, due to better abilities to undertake international trade facilitating a greater deal of optimisation in production patterns across
