learn but the structures in which they must function are not always conducive to such types of reflection as are needed (Senge, 1990). The organization needs to be structured
in such a way as to promote continual learning, which will enhance the organizations own level of success. The basic tenets make sense - a company where every
individual is involved in continual learning, which means that the organization as a system is learning. Building a learning organization, however, is extremely difficult and it would take constant work
towards that end. This essay explains and discusses the five disciplines of a learning organization as described by Senge, who introduced the concept. The essay then moves into a discussion
of the advantages and benefits as well as the weaknesses of this process. The Disciplines of a Learning Organization Peter Senge said the learning organization was based on five
disciplines: 1. Personal Mastery: One factor that is directly linked to the success of an organization is the personal and professional development of each person. Personal mastery refers
specifically to designing a program of development that is continued throughout life. Learning is not limited to those specific arenas that are directly related to the job; they incorporate personal
development intended to enhance ones own interpersonal competence, emotional maturity, awareness of self and expanding ones understanding of the ethical issues inherent in organizational settings. As one gains more
