becoming an integral part of the economy (Sasson, 2005). The "golden era" of medical biotechnology commenced during the 1970s (Sasson, 2005). Genes for polypeptides or proteins would work as drugs
and were cloned in animal or microbial cells (Sasson, 2005). Proteins would be produced as bioreactors (Sasson, 2005). Other substances would be created and commercialized such as bovine growth hormones,
antihepitits vaccines and human insulin (Sasson, 2005). One can begin to see that it has only been in the past few decades that medical biotechnology has been a force to
reckon with. Yet, while there have been made strides made, there have also been controversial issues. Although biomedical technology is somewhat controversial, there have been many positive finds.
Insulin is a good example. Prior to 1982, insulin had been derived from animal sources, but the FDA would approve a recombinant form of human insulin (Snyder, 2005). How did
they accomplish this feat? Snyder (2005) explains that this was realized by inserting human genes into bacteria. Now, there are about one hundred recombinant drugs as well as vaccines (Snyder,
2005). Sasson (2005) points out that the drugs only work some of the time but that new research and future production of medicines should improve. Snyder (2005) also looks
at the fact that biotechnology has improved diagnostic capabilities. Diagnostic techniques in medicine are very important. It is often the case that treatment cannot begin until an adequate diagnosis is
made. An example is the rapid strep test that only came about after awhile of doing cultures. While perhaps not as efficient as an actual culture, the instant strep test
provides pediatricians with a way to decide whether or not to treat the condition with antibiotics. Prior to the tests, physicians had to decide whether or not to treat a
