Literature Review There has been a push to use evidence-based practices in many fields, including health care. It is not as easy as it may seem. Stetler et al. (2009) conducted a study comparing two hospitals, one that was fully integrating evidence-based practices and one that was a beginner in this model. The beginner had been trying for three years but they had not gotten very far. The researchers analyzed numerous factors related to actually using evidence-based practices, including aspects of the unit that would act as obstacles and those professional roles that helped the process succeed or not succeed. For example, there was little resistance in the role model hospital but a lot of resistance and confusion in the beginner hospital. When considering formal and informal leadership, Stetler et al. (2009) found that the advanced practice nurse was both a formal and informal leader in the role model site. The study identified the chief nursing officer who worked closely with the research and education director, clinical directors, advanced practice nurses and staff nurses. These were all key people in leading the change (Stetler et al., 2009). These same people were not identified in the beginning hospital as being key leaders for change. Nurses and others in the role model hospital said that their APNs were really good at telling nurses there is a going project for you, why dont you think about doing it (Stetler et al., 2009).
