practice nursing encounters a number of societal issues that lie right alongside the primary focus of physical health. Family function, in fact, is often directly related to physical health. This fact is drilled home in more than one real life encounter. The media too, however, portrays many scenarios when family function has both direct and indirect impact on health. The movie "Thirteen" is an excellent example of such a portrayal. It illuminates how a young girls self image is adversely affected by a situation that is largely outside her control and how this degraded self image parallels her spiral downward into drug use, promiscuity, and even self mutilation. "Thirteen" is a movie about Tracy, a normal young girl whose world begins to spin out of control with her parents divorce. Having to deal with an overly na?ve and sometimes needy mother and her new boyfriend combines with Tracy being distanced from her father to negatively impact her self image. She resorts to self mutilation as a means to relieve some of the pain that she feels inside and then, after entering the high-risk taking world of a classmate, she begins using drugs, stealing, experimenting with sex, and seeking out more radical means of self mutilation. Each of these changes in Tracys life, of course, goes hand in hand with potentially serious health problems. Not only are her morals slowly being whittled away, she is opening herself to serious harm. Self mutilation and drugs are the most direct avenues of this harm but Tracys sexual experimentation and infactuation with piercings are of serious concern as well given the potential for disease transmission and out-of-wedlock pregnancy.
