burden of deciding when it is time to stop all life support or deny heroic measures is something no spouse or loved one should ever have to do. The
student may choose to relate a story about a grandparent or friend who has been given a short-term prognosis for survival due to terminal illness and how that person steadily
lost the will to live as his or her pain increase and quality of life diminished, noting how those who are not within the grips of constant agony have no
idea what it is like to live in such a state. This is why it is sometimes difficult to understand the humane element of living wills and DNRs.
Until one has been in the place of another who is suffering immeasurable physical pain, not to mention intense emotional discomfort with the fact that his or her life has
been reduced to nothing more than waiting to die, it is not possible to pass judgment as to the association of personhood, morality and spiritual existence.
Making the decision to enact a living will or DNR is one of the most personal and highly emotional decisions a person can make. In light
of contemporary technology and the ability to successfully and efficiently address issues of severe pain, many family members argue - often through the distortion of emotional pain - that it
