Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. Being a kid in an adult's world is a bit like being a visitor in a foreign country without benefit of knowing its customs, language or boundaries; indeed, these aspects of harmonious interaction can be learned, but it requires considerable time and effort to fully remove the barriers between the two sides. The fundamental tenets of Adults Relating to Kids (ARK) is for teachers to overcome those barriers before they ever have a reason to be erected through the development of a caring classroom environment, nurturing relationships with students, peer-mentoring and effectively disciplining undesirable behavior "while still affirming the worth of students" (ARK, 2009). issues such as peer pressure, sex, bullies, substance abuse, anger control, grief, trust, and health issues * Helps teens learn to be accepting of themselves and others * Teaches teens
to accept responsibility for- and to learn from - their own mistakes * Facilitates good relationships with parents, teachers and peers * Promotes positive character development (ARK, 2009).
The research outcome at Houstons Furr High School illustrates the extent to which ARK principles truly do transform the way at-risk high school students
learn to perceive themselves and those around them in a much more positive light. Furrs high dropout rate and discipline problems were indicative of the need for ARK intervention
