The issue of child abuse is one which has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, both
in terms of psychological and sociological research and the media. Many of the studies which have been conducted have been concerned with ways of preventing child abuse, especially in terms
of increasing social services provisions to address cases of neglect, and the ways in which paedophiles in the community should be dealt with.
However, there has also been considerable interest in the effect of abuse
on adult survivors, both in terms of the way in which adults come to terms with early episodes of abuse and also the link between child abuse and the later
development of paedophilia in adults. In the latter case, it is generally felt that the experience of abuse leads the child to form a distorted perception of the relationship between
sexuality and affection, which prevents them from forming adult relationships later in life and leads them instead to seek out much younger people whom they do not perceive as a
