2008; Alic, 2008). This is concerning for a number of reasons. Obesity is associated with numerous health problems including hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, heart disease, stroke, gallbladder
disease, gout, and several cancers (Alic, 2008). Various endocrine, gastro intestinal, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial problems are associated with obesity as well. In addition to the problems which result,
in part, from obesity, a number of physiological and psychological conditions can result in obesity. Even more disturbing is the fact that 400,000 people prematurely die every year in
the United States because of a combination of excess weight and an inadequate level of physical activity (Levri, Slaymaker, Last et. al., 2005).
The intent of this paper is to explore the causes of obesity and to present an evidence-based management plan to address it. Obesity will first be defined and
the various causative factors outlined. Next, a literature search will be conducted to evaluate the use of a specific drug (metformin, a drug sold under the brand name of
Glucophage) in treating obesity. Finally, nursing intervention will be proposed based on the evidence that has been collected. That intervention will be be planned in consideration of
the family change theory, a theory that emphasizes the importance of family and other support structures in effecting permanent lifestyle changes.
