some of the experiences of adult learners and the way they prefer to have their classes conducted. Discussion One of the most commonly held beliefs in education appears to be
that experience is a great teacher, and that adults are always able to build on past experiences to help them in their present situation. However, this isnt always true.
Experience "is not always easily accessible, nor is it always coherent or monodimensional in its meaning. It is not always feasibly simply to use experience as a resource"
(Belzer, 2004, p. 43). In fact, experience can be a hindrance to learning at times, because it can cause adult learners to reject what they are currently learning, because
it doesnt match what they learned earlier (Belzer, 2004). At times, it becomes so difficult to assimilate new facts and ways of thinking that adult learners prefer to cling
to their old beliefs, even though they understand intellectually that those earlier dogmas are now incorrect; the conflict between the old and new may even cause some students to leave
school (Belzer, 2004). This conflict is clearly shown in Belzers article and her case studies of five students. All the subjects were African-Americans; only one had finished high school;
and all lived in low-income neighborhoods. Only one was employed at the time of the study; the others were caring for children or grandchildren (Belzer, 2004). They were
