CONTEXTUAL VARIABLES This eighty-year-old man grew up a child of the Depression, a life lesson that taught him how to be resourceful, thrifty
and economically cautious. Religion was interwoven within his poor but loving family, oftentimes representing the common bond among his parents and siblings when money was unbearably short. Indeed,
his religious reflections carried him through many a bad time throughout his childhood and adolescence, and helped to shape his adult life experiences by remaining with his even after he
married, had a family of his own, and right up through his twilight years. Having no educational training beyond high school, he nonetheless made an emotionally comfortable life in
New Jersey for his first seventy-five years, only to embark upon an unexpected but wholly embraced life change when he moved to the Southwest, leaving one daughter fifteen hundred miles
behind and another three thousand miles behind by moving near his son and daughter-in-law. Culturally and socioeconomically, the student will want to discuss
how this man had a lot of responsibility growing up in his poor household, an experience that taught him to be responsible as an adolescent and grown adult. His
elementary and middle school years were full of academic lessons, caring for his siblings and helping his parents run the home. The time he had left over was split
between his friends and his religious obligations. According to Erikson, ones identity development involves personal exploration in such areas as ethnicity, occupation, gender
