become one of the most pressing issues of our time. Of particular concern is the growing abuse of marijuana and cocaine. Regardless of the substance being abused, however,
drug abuse is inextricably linked with many of the social problems we face today. Not only is drug use counterproductive to the family and school environments, in many cases
it is linked to criminal and deviant behavior. Drug abusers all too often turn to crime to pay for their habits, they fail academically, and they fail in society
as a whole. Drug abusers can become violent or engage in a variety of equally disturbing antisocial behaviors. The question of what triggers drug abuse among our youth,
however, is not so easily answered. Nor is the question of what constitutes effective societal intervention for this growing problem. The problems
associated with drug abuse can indeed be quite severe. In "Antisocial Behavior by Young People : A Major New Review" authors Michael Rutter, Henri Giller, and Ann Hagell (a
child psychiatrist, a criminologist and a social psychologist) observe, for example, that in its more severe manifestations the abuse of drugs can be linked to destructive tendencies which target either
property, people or animals. Drug abusers often steal as it suits their purpose and have no regard for the rights and rules of others. They sometimes show a
lack of remorse and empathy. Rutter, Giller, and Hagell emphasize that a multitude of social-psychological and cultural factors can be involved in drug abuse. The association between drug
