assignment provides an overview of the current literature related to these three different factors influencing adolescent development. Topic One: Egocentrism Vartanians (2000) article on adolescent egocentrism considers
the fact that adolescents appear to believe that they are constantly being watched and that others are assessing their value at all times. Vartanian (2000) also describes the fact
that adolescents believe that they are special and unique. These two constructs, called the imaginary audience and the personal fable, are central in understanding adolescent development and egocentrism related
to social cognition (Vartanian, 2000). Vartanians article is effective because it outlines the existing theories regarding adolescent egocentrism, including those by Elkind in the 1960s, and relates them to ideation
patterns in adolescent behavior. These can then be utilized to understand three sometimes problematic elements of adolescent behavior related to egocentrism, self-consciousness, conformity to group ideals, and risk-taking.
In order to contextualize the views of adolescent behavior and egocentrism and the changes that are important through maturation, Frankenberger (2000) relates a comparison of egocentrism
in adolescents and adults, and found that both imaginary audiences and personal fables are stronger in adolescent populations. When compared to adults, adolescents demonstrate a much stronger propensity for
focusing on the outcomes of the imaginary audience and adjust behaviors relative to this view (Frankenberger, 2000). Further, personal fables, the egocentric idea of uniqueness prevalent in adolescents, also
