Cognitive Development Jean Piaget asserted there are four distinct stages in human cognitive development. He believed they were invariant and sequential, which means that they are universal and one must follow the other. He did acknowledge that there may be some flexibility in the stages in terms of the ages. Adolescents are in the fourth stage, which extends from ages 11-15. It is referred to as the Formal Operational Stage. At this stage the individual is capable of conceptual reasoning. They can think logically about abstract situations. They can test hypotheses systematically. They become more concerned with the hypothetical, the future, and ideological problems (Atherton, 2011). Developing enhanced reasoning skills means that the person can think about multiple options and possibilities for a problem or an event. Hypothetical thinking skills allows the teenager to ask, what if... questions (Morgan & Huebner, 2009). Abstract thinking is an essential skill because it allows the individual to think about things that cannot be seen or touched, like trust. Metacognitive skills improve during thee years. Meta-cognition allows people to think about how they feel and what and how they are thinking (Morgan & Huebner, 2009). Psycho-Social Development Perhaps one of the most-often cited theorists in psycho-social development is Erik Erikson. Erikson provided eight stages of psycho-social development. Like Piaget, they begin at birth, they are invariant and sequential. There is a conflict that must be resolved at each stage and if that conflict is not resolved, Erikson believed the person would have mental health issues as an adult.
