the individual. In an age where close to 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce, director Robert Bentons 1979 domestic drama, Kramer vs. Kramer continues to resonate with
young audiences and can also serve as an instructive tool for human services workers who are assisting adolescents and their families. It is the story of a family breakup,
with career-oriented advertising executive Ted Kramer neglecting his responsibilities to wife Joanna and young son Billy (Kramer vs. Kramer). Ted begins a vigorous year-and-a-half initiation into what it means
to be a single parent while young Billy needs to process what has happened while undergoing the transformation from childhood to adolescence. As he and Billy get to know
each other with more than a few bumps along the way including an impassioned custody battle, various stages of development are portrayed, and cognitive and psychosocial theories are critically probed.
An adolescents development can be shaped by conflict, first the belief that the world and others cannot be trusted or that children reflect their parents not only in appearance but
in behavior. Much of Kramer vs. Kramer involves Billys struggles with his parents separation and divorce and his feelings of abandonment by his mother. He becomes angry and
withdrawn, mistrusting others around him and as a result constantly tests the boundaries Ted establishes for him. His father, who is going through his own emotional crisis with the
imminent divorce, does not always know how to handle Billys occasional outbursts, which he interprets as acting up. Billys security has been shaken to the core, and he needs
to regain the trust in others he lost with Joannas departure. There is also a sense that Billy fears Ted will also one day leave him if he misbehaves.
