child abuse and neglect are viewed as products of poverty and there is a general perception that children who are born to successful parents are less likely to demonstrate the
kinds of problems that occur for impoverished children. Issues like low self-esteem, substance abuse, suicidal ideation and even sexual behaviors have been attributed to some to issues related to
socioeconomic status, as defined in efforts to segment at-risk populations. Increasingly, though, researchers are considering the impacts of the mass media, social influences and peer groups on the participation
in at-risk behaviors. This study considers these theories and applies them to the development of questions on adolescent process provided to three
interviewees. Interviewees were selected randomly based on a request criteria and their demographic data was collected based on their own self-reports before answering questions on adolescent development. Interviewees
included "Maggie," a 41-year-old music teacher, "Susan," a 66-year-old college professor, and "Sanjay" a 19-year-old cashier originally from Sri Lanka. Their responses to the research questions (See Appendix) based
on the background research collected provides some insight into the variety of views that individuals have about the nature of adolescent psychology and the changes in psychological functioning that have
occurred in recent years. Background: Adolescent Psychology Self-esteem is immediate connected with assessments of the role of the individual in
the family environment. Researchers have recognized that family environment, including parental roles, plays a major part in determining the psychosocial functioning of the adolescent (Johnson and Padina 71).
In the past, then, studies have suggested that when parents are substance abusers, their children will have a greater propensity for substance abuse; while this assertion appears to be maintained,
