fact they all tend to share is that adolescence is one of the most trying and challenging times in a persons life. Consequently, the choices one makes during adolescence are
some of the most significant a person will ever make. The reason for the significance of the adolescence period in regard to ones life-long psychological development is that adolescence
is generally regarded as the transitional phase between childhood, during which ones identity is largely provided for one by ones environment and parents, and adulthood, in which one is expected
to grow into and fulfill a role of ones own choosing. Adolescence is the time when this role is first developed and understood, and therefore, the central conflict adolescents face
is that between the identity imposed upon them by their circumstances, and the identity they wish to forge for themselves (Anders, 2012). In Eriksons psychosocial development framework, this is referred
to as the conflict between identity and role confusion, and the real danger is that "if the adolescent cannot make deliberate decisions and choices, especially about vocation, sexual orientation, and
life in general, role confusion becomes a threat" (Anders, 2012). One of the most important contexts in which these important choices can be confronted and made is the context
of an adolescents interactions with their peer groups. When one is a child, one generally associates with people that ones parents choose; the children of parental friends, and so on.
