illness that has gained the attention of the World Health Organization because the incidence of it is increasing across the world. Depression is a disease that affects every aspect
of the individuals life, often leading to the patient being unable to participate in daily life activities, including work. It is an illness that is often missed in the general
practitioners office, which means many people may go undiagnosed for years. In their defense, mild depression may be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are not as severe and could
easily be mistaken for simply tiredness or just a blue day. Research consistently provides the profession with more information about how depression works and how depressed people think. However,
it should be said that some scientific studies about how depressed persons think are not a surprise. They have more negative thought patterns and tend to focus on the negative
instead of the positive. Most often, depression is treated with antidepressant drugs. The medications are usually effective but there are patients whose symptoms do not change even with these
drugs. This is an area that needs further study. Given the fact that there are more and more people experiencing depression, including a relatively large proportion of adolescents, even
more attention needs to be given to the diagnosis and treatment of this illness. Any wide-spread illness is expensive to the patient and the economy. A persons quality of life
is diminished dramatically when they suffer with depression. This makes it more important for professionals in all health care professions to know and understand depression. It is especially important to
focus on early diagnosis and treatment of depressed adolescents. Literature Review The World Health Organization estimates that depression is the fourth most common disease in the world (Moore, 2006).
