and mortality and depression among youth has become increasing prevalent. Adolescent depression has been shown to generate long-term functional consequences for mental health that result in problems in school, interpersonal
relationships and the later life employment. The following overview of adolescent depression, first of all, examines the incidence of adolescent depression, as well as other general statistics and then focuses
on the pathology, therapies and medications used to address this serious health threat to the nations young people. General Statistics The one-year prevalence rates in childhood for major depressive
disorder (MDD) are roughly 2 percent; however, the rate for adolescent ranges from 4 to 7 percent (Gladstone and Beardslee, 2009). The incidence of depression is higher in girls than
boys (Gledhill and Hodes, 2011). According to the National Comorbidity Survey (NCS), the lifetime prevalence for MDD among adolescents, ages 15 to 18, stands at 14 percent and roughly 20
percent of adolescents will experience a depressive disorder by the time they reach age 18, as one-half of all first depressive episodes occur during adolescence (Gladstone and Beardslee, 2009). Furthermore,
research shows that early onset depression can be linked to the disease following a chronic episodic course that can have serious negative effects on the patients life (Gladstone and Beardslee,
2009). Adolescent depression often entails comorbid conditions, such as "somatoform or anxiety disorder, eating psychopathology and conduct and alcohol/substance misuse disorders" (Gledhill and Hodes, 2011, p. 1). Effective treatments
