As society became more permissive, adolescence was more sophisticatedly redefined. Children are now being introduced to adult vices such as alcohol, drugs, and sex at younger ages. Having
sex during adolescence is suddenly deemed as being cool instead of generating emotions of shame and social isolation such experiences once did back in the 1950s and early 1960s.
That is why in the twenty-first century, adolescent attitudes about sex are more important than ever before because they determine at what age sexual behavior commences and what adolescent perceptions
are regarding the consequences of engaging in sexual intercourse. There seems to be a consensus that contemporary adolescent attitudes about sex are generally liberal and lacking in value judgments.
According to research on adolescent sexuality, a variety of sources serves to form these attitudes. For example, a survey of middle school students revealed that most of the participants
sexual attitudes were based upon the medias (television, movies, and the Internet) rather casual portrayal of sex (Ward & Friedman, 2006). Ward & Friedman (2006) report, "Our findings suggest
that TV use, in multiple forms, appears to be linked with adolescent sexuality in may ways, both shaping and being guided by their early sexual experiences" (p. 133). A
Time and CNN public poll reported that between 30 and 45 percent of American teens described "TV" and "friends" to be their go-to sources of information about sex (Chia, 2006,
