changes as does ones perception of the world around them. In the short story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier we see the changes taking place in one young woman. In the following paper we examine a quote from the story as it symbolizes a great deal about adolescence. Adolescence and Marigolds The quote to be examined is as follows: "This was the beginning of compassion, and one cannot have both compassion and innocence" (Collier NA). In understanding something of the quote we must first look at the two defining words that combat one another. These words are "compassion" and "innocence." When we think of compassion we think of being able to relate to anothers pain or suffering or particular experience. And, the experience which urges one to compassion is not likely a good experience. The word innocence leads us to think of the lack of knowledge one may possess. Innocence means that an individual does not know something and remains blind to that knowledge due to the lack of skills with experience and perhaps intelligence. When an individual begins to lose their innocence, seeing the world around them in a new light, they begin to see many different realities. In the case of the quote it obviously refers to suddenly seeing how others may well suffer. When one finally sees and understands that other suffer, innocence is gone and compassion can exist. Compassion is something that cannot exist with innocence, for innocence is a state of mind where pain and true internal suffering is not recognized or even seen. When someone has compassion they can not remain ignorant to the conditions which caused compassion to arise.
