number of theorists, such as Sigmund Freud, who use staging, but two of the most notable paradigms come from Erik Erikson and Jean Piaget. In comparing and contrasting Erikson and
Piagets adolescent stages, there are differences as well as similarities. Eriksons fifth stage of development is equated with identity versus role confusion. This generally takes place between the ages
of thirteen and nineteen ("Eriksons Psychosocial Stages of Development," 2007). During this stage, children are becoming adults and they try to create an identity based on their goals, strengths and
weaknesses, and explore sexual identity as well ("Eriksons Psychosocial Stages of Development," 2007). This is a time in life when human beings are beginning to come into their own.
They were raised by parents and suddenly, they have the ability to strike out on their own. They are often at this time trying to decide on career, or at
least where to attend school. Although teenagers are going through this stage, they will try different identities before they come to the one that they find fits them ("Eriksons
Psychosocial Stages of Development," 2007). In other words, they do not know who they really are and more questions than answers arrive at this point. If they get through the
identity crisis during adolescence then they are able to develop trust and sustain friendships, in spite of differences ("Eriksons Psychosocial Stages of Development," 2007). If they do not come through
