Dr. Marvin Zuckerman, author of Behavioral Expressions And Biosocial Bases Of Sensation Seeking, sensation seeking is "a trait describing the tendency to seek novel, varied, complex, and intense sensations and
experiences and the willingness to take risks for the sake of the experience" (Zuckerman, 1994); as such, adolescents seek the thrill of extreme adventure in order to gain the necessary
zest they require to shift back to normal or mundane life tasks. One gains a significantly better understanding of the basis upon which risk taking exists by realizing that
not all individuals are compelled to experience sensation-seeking activities. What, then, is the definition of a risk taker? Is it someone who
abandons all commonsensical thought and puts his life on the line? Is it an individual who ignores the inherent quest for survival to challenge her mortality? Or is
it a person who steps beyond his or her own boundaries of mental and/or physical safety as a means by which to prove that one can incorporate the extreme with
the ordinary? Indeed, risk taking represents a bit of all of these definitions, inasmuch as it reflects the adolescents need to break free of conventional restraints. Skydiving, for example,
symbolizes complete freedom from all human constraints: cultural, political, economic, etc. By first challenging and then conquering what the vast majority of people look upon with overwhelming fear, adolescent
