It would be fair to label our teenagers narcissists because they are usually concerned mostly with themselves and given their challenges, it seems like a good thing for them to do. Adolescents become detached from their families during these years which makes life very disappointing and difficult for parents. Their only hope is that every parent has gone though it and it will end. This essay discusses some of the conflicts teenagers are faced with. It discusses the pressures and how they are faced with developing an identity, a role identity, and how self-esteem plays a role. Adolescence Erik Erikson proposed eight states in human psychosocial development. They begin at birth and end with death. He believed they were sequential and invariant which means one follows the prior one and all people journey through the same stages. His stages were presented as a series of crises that people needed to resolve. Stage 5 is Adolescence with the approximate ages of 13 to 18. The crisis is identity versus role confusion. It is a very chaotic time for the individual as they try to decide who and what they are want to be. They may experiment with a number of attitudes, values, and personalities trying to find something that will fit and that will lead to their own identity (Boeree, 2006). Self-identity is the goal. Peer pressure begins early in life in todays world but it intensifies for preteens and teens. There are multilayered stress factors that include pressures to wear certain types of clothing, to try sex, pressure to use substances, academic pressures, career decisions, and conflicts with family members.
