the continuation of education later in life. After completion of my undergraduate program in graphic design and work in the field, I have identified a focus for what I
believe will be a fascinating career direction and plan to pursue a Masters Degree in Typography. My motivation for pursuing an advanced degree in typography relates to my
experiences in graphic design and the focus on typography as an essential element in publication, artistry, graphic illustrations, and all forms of print media. Typography influences how the written
word is perceived, how it is used and how the world integrates language and form into visual displays. The progression of typography has both historical and cultural contexts and
reveals the constantly changing influences of technology and artistry on displays of the printed word. As an undergraduate student, I believed that my focus on graphic design would
allow for the integration of a range of different methods for developing visual arts. It was this range that had significance and value in my development as both an
artist and designer. Though experiences in the design industry over the past three years, I have recognized that while there is value in developing a range of skills, there
is also value in concentrating on one element in the vast field of graphic design, and I have found typography to be a compelling and rich field of study.
The foundations and history of typography alone provide an interesting basis for developing studies; I have also recognized, though, that any focus of this type must also reflect the practical
applications of typography and the correlation with career development. From a personal educational perspective, my focus on typography is based on my desire to expand my understanding of the
