Regions and saw first hand the unique nature of this landscape. This experience was one of the most significant of my high school years and gave me the opportunity
to understand firsthand the interconnected nature of the worlds ecosystem and the need for greater awareness about issues like sustainability. Being chosen to participate in the People to People Student
Ambassador Organization was a great honor in itself. This program was first set up in the early 1960s under the direction of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who believed that
a greater understanding of the cultures of the world would be valuable for American citizens. By visiting different cultures and experiencing different communities, President Eisenhower believed that Americans could
gain a greater understanding of the commonality that exists between seemingly different societies. After being selected, I set a goal for myself of being open to different experiences in
order to allow myself to gain the most from my time in Antarctica. In Antarctica, I experienced a significant social culture with a history and a deeply defined sense of
community. I also participated with researchers and explored the Polar Regions, recognizing the very different physical structures, flora and fauna and the limitations imposed by the climate of Antarctica.
After just a few days there, I saw how quickly my personal perspective changed and how open I was to a greater understanding of this "new" world. My
personal exploration extended over the entire time I was in Antarctica and I wish my stay could have been longer. One of the notable messages that I took away from
