name Grace Hopper may be unrecognized by many, most in our computer oriented world recognize the name COBOL as belonging to a universal computer language. Grace Brewster Murray became
known as Grace Hopper when she married Vincent Foster Hopper in 1931 (Science Women, 2004). She would later divorce Hopper and pursue an extensive career in the U.S. Navy,
a career in which she would be instrumental in the development of COBOL. Hopper was anything but our stereotypical image of a computer geek, however. Not only was
she female, she was visually striking. A culturally refined woman with a remarkable level of intelligence, her small frame and grandmotherly face coupled with her savvy to gain her
the name "Grandma COBOL". Her appearance hardly gave away the fact that she pulled over forty years in the U.S. Navy and had so many accomplishments to her name
that she even had a battleship named after her (OHanlon, 2001). She will be forever remembered as an:
"intellectual, quick-witted woman-who never hesitated to speak her mind- [and who] helped evolve the computer into a technology that would be more accessible to everyone
through a common language" (OHanlon, 2001). Hopper was born in 1906 in
New York City (American Science Leaders, 2001). Encourage by her father to reach outside the societal confines normally reserved for women, Hopper excelled academically and earned a B.A. in
mathematics and physics from Vasser where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa (WIC.org, 2004). Subsequently she earned an M.A. in mathematics, and a PhD. in mathematics, both from Vasser University
