Cheng Ho (also known as Zheng He, and Ma Sanpao) became one of the most accomplished sea voyagers of history (Rosenberg). A wartime captive that was castrated and then became a servant in the Emperors sons home, Cheng Ho proved his value and, when his master became emperor, ultimately was promoted to admiral in the Chinese army (Rosenberg). His fleet included over 100 ships and 28,000 men (Thinkquest). His seven voyages extended from Asia to east Africa, to the Persian Gulf, Egypt, Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) and various points in between, earning him the record for sailing further than any other ships commander in that time in history (Thinkquest). Cheng Ho sailed during the height of Chinas maritime glory, a time when numerous diplomatic, scientific, and commercial events were changing the world. Cheng Hos voyages had considerable significance. They occurred during one of the most fascinating times in history. During this time period Europe was embroiled in the struggle to move away from the Middle Ages. China, on the other hand, was engaged in just as an impressive task. During this century she would undertake the chore of building one of the worlds most impressive naval fleets. This fleet of ships, and admirals like Cheng Ho brought China to the brink of a new world direction.
