Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. Nick Klaws is well within his rights - both by policy and ethics - to suspend Joe Blow's account for failing to uphold university protocol that states school computers are to be used only for school-related reasons. That Joe was conducting personal business by earning money from a school computer gave Nick enough reason to pull rank and remove his privileges. Surveillance, even though significantly intrusive, plays an integral role in saving society from itself, given the fact that people like Joe are taking less and less responsibility for their own actions and how they may create a damaging influence upon others, a pertinent reason why this is a computer ethics problem and not just a common ethics problem. In contrast, Joe grasps at straws trying to defend being caught doing what he knows was wrong, yet his ego compels him to challenge the validity and legality of Nicks decision. The absence of defining law in this area gives way to the guiding force of university policy that clearly states personal business is not to be conducted upon school computers. Nick had more than enough reason to suspect Joe of inappropriate usage; given the fact that a major part of Nicks responsibility is to forestall cheating, his actions were ethically warranted in light of Joes questionable activities. Joe counters Nicks actions by citing how at its core, privacy comes down to the right to keep secrets, which are quite telltale of how each individual defines his or her truest sense of self.
