of New York hosted a conference in December 2000, outlining the future of corporate governance in terms of then-new regulatory changes at the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and stressing the need for all businesses and particularly banks to increase transparency and accountability. Changes already have taken place within the nations - and worlds - leading auditing firms, and several banking rules have changed recently. Those involved in the conference sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York praise those changes that already have occurred while they continue to urge further action. These changes have precipitated the need for policy adjustment at banks in other parts of the world. Current Events The US and several other nations have been promoting adoption of an international accounting convention based on the US system of financial reporting for the past several years. Some nations have taken offense at the efforts, referring to the very idea as another example of Western imperialism. The still-unfolding Enron-Andersen scandal has given opponents all the reasons they are ever likely to need for avoiding the US-based system of financial reporting. That development has originated with the fact that Enron and Arthur Andersen were able to slide by all the SEC regulations, even as that agency was revamping its reporting requirements and requiring that more than 100 exchange-listed organizations restate their earnings for several periods.
