Intellectual disability, which in the past was more commonly referred to as mental retardation, is the presence of limitations in mental functioning that can range significantly, but can impact cognitive
development, communications, social skill development and self-care skills. Autism is described as a pervasive development disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revised (2000), characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in a number of specific areas, including social interactions, communications, behavior modeling and normative activity participation.
Autism is "characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development: reciprocal social interaction skills, communication skills, or the presence of stereotyped behavior, interests and activities" (DSM-4-TR,
2000). The DSM-4-TR notes a number of names for autism spectrum disorders, including Early Infantile Autism, Childhood Autism, Kanners Syndrome and Aspergers Syndrome. Children with autism may undergo
a variety of different assessments that determine their level of impairment in specific areas, and these assessments related to diagnoses can impact the approaches with the student used in the
educational setting. Severe disabilities can include a range of physical, emotional, behavioral and intellectual disabilities that can impact their participation in the educational setting. Multiple disabilities are
frequently present in the case of individuals with severe disabilities, and multiple disabilities can include physical disabilities and cognitive delays that can be linked either to the origins of the
physical impairment or issues related to social development. Other factors sometimes come into play as a result of severe disabilities, including lack of emotional or behavioral regulation. In each
