The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) is a patient satisfaction survey and assessment of the level of quality care provided by hospitals and healthcare providers. Included within the HCAHPS are patient questions that specifically apply to the topics of communication between patients and healthcare providers, in regards to both nurses and physicians. Furthermore, a HCAHPS rating also encompasses issues having to do with hospital cleanliness and safety. As statistically, there are on average 2 million cases of nosocomial (hospital-acquired infections) each year, this is a major problem in quality care that must be addressed. The following examination of these aspects of the HCAHPS, first of all, outlines the parameters of this assessment system. Then, an intervention is proposed that utilizes Jean Watsons Theory of Transpersonal Care as its theoretical framework and the outcomes of the intervention are defined and recommendations are offered. HCAHPS For fiscal year 2013, the VBP (Value-Based Purchasing) program of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will require evaluations of core measures and the perceptions of patients in regards to hospital care (Grellner, 2012). These evaluations are described in the HCAHPS and will be used by the CMS to determine hospital reimbursement (Grellner, 2012). Seventy percent of the reimbursement rate will be determined by twelve core measures and 30 percent will be based on eight HCAHPS composited measures (Grellner, 2012).
