As the recent shootings at Virgina Tech and other violent incidents in schools around the nation attest, incidences of violence in our nations schools have
reached epidemic proportions. Everything from radical incidents of violence between individuals and groups to school shootings and reports of bombs has appeared in recent headlines. School violence is
now a very real, and a very tragic, element of American life, an element which must somehow be addressed. Schools are taking various measures to make this address.
Unfortunately, many of those measures are met with protests student freedom and rights are being sabotaged. At some point we must admit that some sacrifice must be made if
we are to save lives and to insure our students that institutions of learning are someplace that they can safely be. As has
been noted, schools are taking many steps to improve school security. Some schools have elected to improve school security by requiring students to wear student identification badges while on
campus or at school-sponsored activities (Federal Register). This has obvious advantages but there are many obvious shortcomings as well. Badges can be stolen and counterfeited. Never-the-less, this
step is an important move towards improving school security. Not surprisingly, however, some have objected on the basis that such a requirement is a violation of the students right
