United States. It affects more than 34 percent of American adults and 16 percent of the adolescent population (Dietz & Hunter, 2009). It is primarily examined from health/medical
and societal perspectives. Research studies have indicated that obesity puts individuals at risk for several types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), and heart disease and
contributes to psychological maladies such as depression. U.S. citizens and society are both paying high prices for obesity. It is responsible for increasing mortality rates for children and
adults and the medical conditions attributed to obesity require long-term care. In fact, one study has revealed more than 25 percent of health costs (billions of dollars) in the
United States involve weight and obesity related issues (Schechter, 2008, p. 20). Therefore, the question many concerned Americans, healthcare professionals, and legislators are collectively asking is: What is the
best way to address obesity in the United States. Core concepts include body mass index, diet (nutrition) and exercise, and education and policy. Obesity is defined by a
persons body mass index. If adults have a body mass index greater than 30 and children/adolescents (ages 2 to 19) have a body mass index that is greater than
the 95th percentile for age and gender, they are classified as obese (Dietz & Hunter, 2009). For years, obesity was addressed by focusing on diet or proper nutrition and
exercise. However, in recent years, studies have indicated that obesity is less a problem of the individual than it is a social disease that should therefore be addressed through
