the working and the controlling classes seeing increases in their standard of living in the years following his publication. In many developed nations it is clear that there is an
overall increase in the standard of living. However, the way that this occurred may be seen as unequal. Whilst those at the poorer end of the social ladder are seeing
an increase in their income and standard of living the increase is much slower that those who are within the upper echelons. This is true in Australia as well as
many other nation. Therefore, even thought the political rhetoric may be the increased standard of living, we may argue that the distribution of income is worsening. If we look
for the evidence to support this we need to define the way n which we define income. The Australian bureau of statistics look at income in differing ways, the two
we will consider are private income and social wage income. The private wage income is the money earned, however, the social wage income includes the transfer payments, such as welfare,
as well as the non cash benefits such as state aided health care (Nellis and Parker, 2000). However we look at the statistics we see that there is a
growing inequality in the distribution of the income. If we look at this, adjusted for household size as well as the deduction of income tax we can look at the
