Shands Healthcare is the teaching hospital of the University of Florida, a public entity subject to requirements that it accept any patient seeking medical assistance. Shands faces the
same human and financial restraints with which most university hospitals struggle. As technology continues to advance; the baby boomers begin reaching retirement age; the Medicare crisis continues; and the
nursing shortage intensifies; Shands can expect to face even greater financial challenges in the future. Currently, obesity has become an official, named epidemic
in the US. Bariatric surgery was looked on in the past as a "vanity" procedure; today it is gaining attention for its influence in reversing Type II diabetes (Miami
Valley Hospital Opens New Bariatric Surgery Unit, 2007). Though resulting weight loss is beneficial, the procedure still is not one paid for by most insurance programs. Offering the
procedure promises benefit for patients and more positive financial results for Shands Healthcare. Situation Analysis Competitive Environment Other local hospitals provide immediate competitive
rivalry. Baptist Medical Center, Mayo Clinic and St. Lukes are large local health care providers. In the current environment of rising costs and increasing rates those without sufficient
insurance, private hospitals can be expected to fare better. Though Shands is not a totally public hospital, it is the teaching hospital of a public university and as such
has a responsibility to accept individuals in need of medical assistance without regard for their ability to pay. This gives Shands a financial disadvantage relative to private providers in
the area, which have the luxury of accepting only those patients who can prove at the outset that they have the ability (i.e., insurance) to pay the bills their care
