Prices are falling and are close to prices of those with standard fuel systems, and neither the customer nor the company needs to be concerned about what type of fuel is placed into the tank when the car is rented. Alternative fuels have moved from the realm of the "tree huggers" to that of serious business. The issue as a whole gains attention for several reasons, not the least of which is that Americas cities need alternatives to pollution-creating internal combustion fuel byproducts. Lotus Rental Car can directly participate in positive action to effect positive change in environmental effects of auto use, but of course the primary issue from a business perspective is whether the company can take such action in an approach that brings benefit to the business. Environmental attention is all well and good, but Lotus has opportunity to alter the status quo only so long as it remains in business. Fortunately, conditions today are such that Lotus is able to choose a path that benefits all stakeholders. Alternative Fuels and Alternative Fuel Vehicles In the past, it was necessary to alter engines and fuel systems in order to take advantage of the benefits of alternative fuels. Developments in alternative fuels currently available are such that several are interchangeable with traditional pure-petroleum fuels, a condition necessary for Lotus to consider. While Lotus itself can use alternative fuels for onsite fueling, the company has no control over what customers choose to place into fuel tanks. Biofuels are not available everywhere, and customers need to be able to refuel their rental cars wherever they happen to be. Diesel vehicles have an advantage over gasoline-powered vehicles in that they can use biofuels in any degree interchangeably with traditional pure-petroleum diesel fuel (Producing Low Emissions, n.d.).
