Substance addiction has a diversity of forms and impacts. Individuals can be addicted to alcohol, illicit drugs, or even prescription drugs.
They can also react very differently in response to their addiction. In all forms of addiction, however, a delicate balance results between individual rights to do whatever it is
with their bodies that they choose and societys right to protect its own welfare. In some instances it becomes necessary to coerce an addicted individual to receive treatment for
their addiction. Whether it is the addicts family or the criminal justice system that enacts this coercion, a number of ethical considerations must be kept in mind.
Some addicts simply go along their merry ways drinking or drugging themselves into a harmless stupor. Others, however, can be potentially harmful as a
result of their addiction. D rug abuse is inextricably linked with many of the social problems we face today. Not only is drug use counterproductive to the family
and school environments, in many cases it is linked to criminal and deviant behavior. Drug abusers all too often turn to crime to pay for their habits, they fail
academically, and they fail in society as a whole. Drug abusers can become violent or engage in a variety of equally disturbing antisocial behaviors. They can present a
danger while driving under the influence, operating heavy machinery, or going about any of lifes other activities where their actions have the potential to influence others.
