The identification phase involves identifying which members of the family should be present for the counseling process; this is usually a decision based on age. For instance, very young children might be excluded. During the introduction phase, the primary job of the counselor is to reduce anxiety in the counseling environment and instill confidence in the family that he or she is well-qualified to provide help in their situation, and to offer hope that, because they are actively seeking help, they can eventually achieve change. During the strength assessment phase, the counselor helps family members to identify their specific strengths that will be useful in helping the addicted member. The history phase naturally involves developing a thorough understanding of the addicted persons history with drugs or alcohol, the circumstances of their addiction and so on, including any aspects of the history they may not be forthcoming about. During the asking for help phase, the counselor helps family members realize how they can be of legitimate help to the addicted member through facilitating open discussion, and lastly, the counselor gets each family member to reaffirm his or her commitment to helping the addicted party. 2.
